There is nearly no doubt that The Weeknd and Daft Punk’s major hit and lead single Starboy was ripped from Somali-American singer and songwriter Yasminah. Even when passively listening to Yasminah’s Hooyo, there are obvious similarities in instrumentation and vocal inflection to the Starboy track. The Hooyo track was released in 2009 while mega-hit Starboy was released in 2016.
Several lawsuits and threats of lawsuits have already occurred due to this song snatching. The producers of Hooyo had threated lawsuits but later settled out of court for an undisclosed amount. Yasminah herself had already hired a lawyer to settle this matter but claims her label kept all the money in the settlement. Therefore, Yasminah is up for another round of seeking a five million dollar lawsuit pressured against the Weeknd, Daft Punk and Republic Records.
This is not the first time The Weeknd has been accused of ripping off songs. Famed producer and Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has claimed both the Weeknd and Kanye West ripped off his production style.

TMZ posted several court documents including blog posts and comments that state the obvious similarities between Hooyo and Starboy.
